As State Representative A Progressive Champion in Springfield

Home  »  About Kelly  »  As State Representative

In my 5 years as your State Representative, I have taken the experience I gained in my decades of public advocacy and used them to help bring real change to our community. I have been especially active in the areas of criminal justice reform, LGBT rights, youth advocacy, public safety, gun control, and education. You can find the full list of bills I have sponsored here.

In the past legislative session, often marred by political gridlock, 10 bills that I sponsored became law, including 6 on which I was the chief sponsor.

I helped make Illinois schools safer for our children, took guns out of the hands of dangerous stalkers, and banned harmful “conversion therapy”, a predatory scam that traumatizes LGBT youth.

I chair the House subcommittees on Firearms and Firearm Safety and Unemployment Insurance, and the House Committee on Juvenile Justice and System-Involved Youth. I serve on 8 others, including Labor & Commerce, Restorative Justice and Human Services.

We’ve accomplished a lot, but residents of the 14th District know that there is so much more that needs to be done. We need a responsible Illinois budget that doesn’t leave our schools and most vulnerable populations behind. We need to keep working to reform our criminal justice system, our outdated drug enforcement laws, and our pension system. In a time when everyday Illinoisans are struggling to make ends meet, we need a truly progressive income tax that takes the burden off middle-class families, and a minimum wage that allows workers to escape poverty. And in a time of horrendous gun violence in our state and around America, we need to make it more difficult for those with violent intentions to get their hands on guns.

If re-elected, I will continue to pour my energy into the issues that matter to you and your family.
